Saupe qui peut: a film to help you feel better about what you eat
Our plates reflect our links with biodiversity. Short supply chains, sustainable fishing, rediscovering forgotten species: there are many ways to eat in a way that respects life. That's what the film "Saupe qui peut" is all about. This documentary, produced by the Bouillabaisse Turfu association and the Parc national des Calanques, gives us ideas on how to eat better. The documentary brings together chef Christian Qui, founder of Bouillabaisse Turfu, Sandrine Ruitton, a scientist at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology (MIO) and Achraf Stifine, a fisherman from Marseilles. By bringing together cuisine, small-scale fishing and marine biodiversity, the film encourages consumers to cook a forgotten or even unloved species: the saupe, a herbivorous fish that is fairly abundant in the Mediterranean. Following a preview screening at the World Conservation Congress last September, the public release of this film in 2022 marks the National Park's entry into the UN's "International Year of Small-scale Fishing and Aquaculture".

Invasive red algae detected off Port-Cros island

Lophocladia lallemandii, an invasive filamentous red alga native to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, has been detected for the first time in the waters of the Port-Cros National Park by researchers from the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology (MIO).
The eyes of the sea: the Bathybot robot will plunge into the darkness of the Mediterranean abyss - Podcast France Inter
A small robot called Bathybot is going to dive more than 2.5 kilometres to the bottom of the Mediterranean, where no light penetrates. Its mission: to make an inventory of the organisms in the depths, and reveal the mysteries of bioluminescence.

In the Mediterranean, a large part of the biodiversity develops on the seabed between 0 and 50 metres. It is at this depth that we find the Posidonia meadow, a flowering plant endemic to this sea, a veritable nursery for the Mediterranean marine world.

France Inter - Camille goes green - Ecological disaster looming in Sri Lanka
The fire on board a cargo ship that had been sinking for 13 days off the Sri Lankan capital was extinguished on Tuesday 1 June thanks to an international operation. But the ship is now sinking, with fuel oil, nitric acid and millions of plastic pellets already beginning to spread. As Damien Sous (from 2'10"), from MIO-Université de Toulon, explains, the most direct impact is from fuel oil and nitric acid!

Project NOTION: The little sea creatures that could save our oceans
The ocean helps to regulate the climate. So, in the face of global warming and ocean acidification, what role do diazotrophic plankton play in this process? Who are their allies? What are the consequences of climate change for these micro-organisms and, more importantly, for the biological activity and productivity of the oceans?

Tackling environmental problems as a matter of urgency: a series of events to alert decision-makers in South-East Asia
Xavier Mari, biogeochemist and oceanographer at IRD-MIO spoke on 22 March 2021 at the online event on air pollution entitled "Black carbon: the dark side of human activity". He shared with other experts the results of past and current projects, as well as solutions-based initiatives designed to mitigate air pollution and reduce emissions.
Emily Strady, also a researcher at IRD-MIO, provided her expertise on the issue of plastic pollution in marine environments at the "Leaking Cities in South-East Asia: Marine Plastic Pollution" event. She spoke about the measures that can be taken to significantly reduce the global dumping of plastics in the oceans, particularly in South-East Asia.

Mission Tonga - In search of the Pacific's undersea volcanoes
A year ago, the French oceanographic vessel Atalante set sail for the Pacific in search of shallow submarine volcanoes to understand and anticipate the consequences of fluid emanations on marine life and the climate. The expedition, led by Sophie Bonnet (MIO IRD) and Cécile Guieu (LOV CNRS), is analysing and studying the consequences of the input of trace elements from shallow hydrothermal sources to determine their potential impact on marine productivity and the biological carbon pump.

An air purifier installed at the Lycée Français Alexandre Yersin in Hanoi for studying
the impact of fine particle pollution on marine processes!

In order to carry out experiments to determine the impact of fine particle pollution on marine processes, we acquired the Aufero air purifier developed by ENS Clean Air. Technically, this air purifier works by positive ionisation. The fine particles sucked in at a flow rate of 7500 m3/h are ionised at the purifier inlet, then collected on a negatively-charged metal plate, which purifies the expelled air. This filterless air purification system (which can operate continuously without clogging) is capable of eliminating particles from 10 nanometres to 30 micrometres in the ambient air. This equipment, generally used to purify the air in very large polluted areas such as car parks, was acquired with IRD funding as part of theSOOT-SEA initiative in order to collect large quantities of fine particles, which are recovered by scraping the collection plate.
Initially planned to be installed outdoors in Hanoi, we thought it would be a shame if no-one benefited from this purified air. So, in agreement with the French Embassy in Vietnam and the Lycée Français Alexandre Yersin, we have opted to set up in the latter's gymnasium.. In view of the deteriorating air quality in Hanoi, the Lycée had to introduce a protocol to protect its pupils, including the cancellation of outdoor classes when PM2.5 concentrations exceeded 55 µg/m3 (IQA>150); the classrooms were equipped with a general air purification system. The gymnasium to which pupils could have gone when air quality reached critical levels was not equipped with an air purification system.
The SOOT-SEA air purifier was therefore installed in the gymnasium. It is in constant operation, providing cleaner air in the gymnasium and continuously collecting the particulate aerosols present in Hanoi. We collect around 200g of fine particles every 3 months.

The MIO coordinates a European research project on microplastics led by the University of Toulon
The aim of the Interreg Marittimo SPlasH! project (Stop alle Plastiche in H2O) is to analyse the presence, origin and dynamics of microplastics in the ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Genoa, Olbia, Toulon) and to determine their potential role as a vector for contaminants in coastal areas. The data collected by the MIO laboratory at the University of Toulon and its partners will provide the international community with a better understanding of the link between geography and the quantity/nature of microplastics, as well as the risks associated with their presence.

In search of the new Sargasso Sea
From 19 June at 13 July 2017A scientific expedition aboard the ANTEA, a vessel in the French oceanographic fleet, has enabled a team of researchers to carry out extensive sampling of the flora and fauna associated with the "sargassum rafts". This brown pelagic algae, found in the tropical Atlantic, has been washing up on the Atlantic coast since 2011, as a result of ocean circulation. They are causing major environmental, health and economic problems, particularly in the Caribbean and French Guiana.
The OUTPACE campaign on video!
The OUTPACE oceanographic campaign ran from 18 February at 3 April 2015 in the Pacific Ocean aboard the M/O L'Atalante. The aim of the project was to provide a zonal description of biogeochemistry and biological diversity in the tropical south-west Pacific and to produce a detailed study of biological production and its fate in three contrasting sites, with a particular focus on production supported by nitrogen fixation and carbon export by the biological pump.
