General circulation in the Mediterranean and climate change

Manager : Isabelle Taupier - Letage

The Mediterranean is generally likened to the "Big Blue", with the underlying idea of a uniform, calm sea. But satellite thermal images have given it a completely different face: it is extremely energetic and turbulent, with deep waters rising to the surface ("upwellings") in certain specific places, such as the Gulf of Lion, and jets, meanders and eddies everywhere that induce currents (~1 knot) in all directions, whatever the local mean current.

  • What do we know about currents in the Mediterranean today?
  • Is there a consensus in the community?
  • How do you study currents?
  • What are the tools?
  • How does an oceanographic campaign work?
  • What are the measures we use to monitor the Mediterranean?
