The MIO, and in particular the EMBIO team, is heavily involved in this teaching programme.
The Intensive Study Programme in Marine and Coastal Zone Planning and Management has been designed to bring together students from different backgrounds through an innovative course on the multidisciplinary subject of marine and coastal zone planning and management. It is developed through three complementary modules: two distance learning modules and a two-week workshop.
In summary, the intensive study programme will provide participants with:
fundamental knowledge of how land-based planning profoundly influences marine and coastal areas and vice versa;
an understanding of the main aspects of marine and coastal zone planning and management, the main challenges and potential solutions for effective implementation;
knowledge of the main aspects and strategies adopted in citizen science and how they can support the implementation of spatial planning and management ;
a detailed overview of best practice in the planning and management of marine and coastal areas, thanks to interactive courses given by experts from the project's partner institutions.
During the workshop, which takes place in Venice, students from different backgrounds and partner universities will work in groups on a real-life case study of the local marine and coastal zone at the workshop site.
This will be an opportunity for participants to apply the knowledge acquired during the previous two modules and to benefit from front-end courses given by the experts involved in the programme, who will share their professional experience in marine and coastal zone planning and management and support students in the development of their work.
The aim of the workshop is to provide participants with a clear understanding of the planning and management strategies, the communication strategies available and the related challenges, by getting them to work on existing issues on a real case, with real data, in a real political and administrative context, with real actors and workers.
Teamwork: during the workshop, participants will work in groups. Each group will be made up of participants of different nationalities, backgrounds (planning and oceanography), skills (e.g. GIS, graphics tools) in order to simulate real multidisciplinary teamwork.
Content: During the workshop, research and campaign experiences selected by the members of the partnership will be presented to the students by the experts involved in the mobility programme.
The selected case studies will be situated in the coastal and marine geographical context of the host university. Students will be provided with data and information on the case study to support the development of their work. A field visit will be organised to the coastal area adopted as the case study to promote understanding of the key features and planning and management challenges of the local context of the case study.
The workshop will also be an opportunity to promote students' understanding of ecosystem services by involving them in a role-playing simulation, the Marine Ecosystem Services Game.
Presentation of the work: in order to give the students a better understanding of the real dynamics of planning and management, their work will be presented at a public event organised as part of the project, where local experts and stakeholders will be invited to give very important feedback on the results of the workshop.
Assessment: The examination for this module will be based on active participation in the workshop (30%), problem-based activities consisting of oral presentation of a potential strategy developed for "marine planning, management and communication" of a real case study (30%), writing a report on a potential strategy developed for "marine planning, management and communication" of a real case study (40%).
At the end of the workshop, a joint certificate will be awarded to participants by the three universities involved.
