The FUMSECK team took shelter from the storm raging in the Ligurian Sea and took advantage of the calm offered by the Bay of Villefranche to meticulously prepare for the groundbreaking experiment on Monday 6 May 2019: injecting coloured biodegradable beads into an area measuring 100m x 100m by 15 m depth, and attempting to detect them using cytometry.
The experiment will be carried out in four stages: pumping water to 15m, mixing this water with the beads and the dye, injecting the mixture at 15m, then detection using a CTD and pumping on board to the cytometer. The injected bead slick will be located using Lagrangian drifting buoys tracked on board by satellite.
Before the experiment, the team will meet up with the MIO glider, which will have completed its mission to track the Sentinel satellite and characterise the waters in the area identified for the ball drop.
