Adopted in Montego Bay on 10 December 1982 and entered into force on 16 November 1994, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) now has 169 Parties, including the European Union, following its ratification by Rwanda on 18 May 2023. Thus, 30 years after its incorporation into positive law, the Montego Bay Convention retains a vitality that many other treaties have long since lost.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of UNCLOS, an extraordinary symposium of the International Association for the Law of the Sea (AssIDMer) will be held on 21 and 22 November 2024 at the University of Toulon.
Supported by the two laboratories of the Faculty of Law in Toulon, the Centre d'Études et de Recherche sur les Contentieux (CERC) and the Centre de droit et de politique comparés Jean-Claude Escarras (CDPC-JCE, UMR DICE 7318), in partnership with the Préfecture maritime de la Méditerranée, This event follows on from the conference organised by the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales et communautaires (CERIC, UMR DICE 7318) in Aix-en-Provence on 16 and 17 June 2022, under the patronage of AssIDMer, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Montego Bay Convention.
Scheduled to last a day and a half (the afternoon of Thursday 21 and the whole day of Friday 22 November 2024), the aim of the conference is to provide food for thought and stimulate discussion between lawyers specialising in the law of the sea, whether academics or practitioners, particularly seafarers, on the theme of The new challenges of the law of the sea.
